چکیده

Polarimetric SAR images acquired at Cand L-band over sea ice in the Greenland Sea, Baltic Sea, and Beaufort Sea have been analysed with respect to their potential for ice type classification. The polarimetric data were gathered by the Danish EMISAR and the US AIRSAR which both are airborne systems. For the test sites, complementary data about the characteristics of the ice cover and about the environmental conditions are available. A hierarchical classification scheme was chosen for sea ice because existing knowledge about magnitudes, variations, and dependences of sea ice signatures can be directly considered. The optimal sequence of classification rules and the rules themselves depend on the ice conditions/regimes. The use of the polarimetric phase information improves the classification only in the case of thin ice types but is not necessary for ice above 30 cm thickness.

Polarimetric Decomposition Analysis of Sea Ice Data

This paper explores polarimetric properties of Arctic sea ice. The analysis is performed in several steps. First, the SAR image is segmented into distinct classes using an unsupervised classification algorithm, which incorporates both polarimetric and statistical signal features. The algorithm has built in contextual smoothing through Markov Random Field modeling. The image segments are subsequ...

Classification of Ice Types from Convair-580 Data of Northumberland Strait, PEI

RESUME The discrimination between open water and sea ice, and/or between sub -classes of sea ice are challenges for SAR remote sensing. Compared to single channel SAR data, fully polarimetric data contain more physical information about the scattering processes, which can be used to increase the discrimination accuracy. Unsupervised polarimetric classification or segmentation approaches allow t...

Improving Sea Ice Characterization in Dry Ice Winter Conditions Using Polarimetric Parameters from C- and L-Band SAR Data

Sea ice monitoring and classification is one of the main applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing. C-band SAR imagery is regarded as an optimal choice for sea ice applications; however, other SAR frequencies has not been extensively assessed. In this study, we evaluate the potential of fully polarimetric L-band SAR imagery for monitoring and classifying sea ice during dry w...

Applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar Polarimetry

The work reported in this paper was carried out under an ESA contract (15600/01/I-LG) with the purpose of demonstrating the potential of polarimetric SAR compared with single-polarization data for some key application areas to support the decisions on future satellite SAR systems. Three key application areas were identified (a) SAR polarimetry for agriculture classification, (b) SAR polarimetry...

Model-Based Classification of Polarimetric SAR Sea Ice Data

This paper discusses the role of scattering decomposition models in the classification of polarimetric SAR sea ice data. The iterative Wishart classifier was applied to 3-frequency airborne SAR data acquired in the Beaufort Sea, and the scattering models were found to be helpful in interpreting the assigned classes. In addition to using the full data set, reduced data sets based on an eigenvect...
